Consumption of energy and the energy mix Flashcards
What does the energy mix show?
Energy mix shows the volume of each resource used in a country. This is usually be shown in percentages
Why do countries have an energy mix and not just rely on one source of energy?
.An energy mix spreads the risk, if one source runs out another will still be available
.Renewables can be unreliable
.Renewables do not yet have the capacity to serve the entirety of a nations demand for energy
How many jobs does the UK’s ten point plan want to create?
250,000 jobs
How much energy does the ten point plan-plan on creating through offshore wind?
Enough offshore wind energy to power every home
Give three of the UK’s strengths which the tn point plan is built around
.Offshore wind
.Hydrogen
.Nuclear
.Electric vehicles
.Public transport
.Jet zero and greener maritime
.Homes and public buildings
.Carbon capture
.Nature
.Innovation and finance
How much government investment will the ten point plan mobilise?
£12 billion to create and support up to 250,000 highly skilled green jobs
What is the natural energy source in Norway and why?
HEP is the natural energy choice due to its mountainous nature
What affects the energy security of the UK?
Increased reliance on imported energy sources
In 2020 what % reduction of domestic greenhouse gases did the UK commit to?
68%
In 2020 Norway committed to reducing domestic greenhouse gases by what percentage?
50%
What process has received intense political backlash in the UK?
Fracking
How does the climate affect energy consumption?
Low energy consumption in Africa reflects low levels of economic development
.High energy consumption in North America and the Middle East and Australia reflect the extra energy required to make extremes of heat and cold more comfortable in the home, work and public places
Why may a government not take the cheapest route to meeting its energy needs?
Out of concern for the environment in general and the level of carbon emissions that could be emitted, taking the more expensive option may be used for a greener energy mix
What does the UK government intend to increase the use of in its energy mix?
Use more nuclear power and broaden its energy mix as a whole
