Construction Flashcards
What is the board feet formula?
thickness x width x length x # of pieces / 12(L-ft) or 144(L-in)
T x W x L x #P / 12 or 144 op
How to calculate for board measure?
Bf x 1.1(2”thick or more)
Bf x 1.2(1”thick or less)
What is the nail formula?
Framing - P= (D/6) x (bm/100)
Sheathing- P= (D/4) x (bm/100)
What is the formula for marking long walls and short walls?
- Work space
- Fixtures
- Studs
LW: 1. -1”
2. -1/2” 3. ON center
SW: 1. -ws x 2
2. -ws 3. -ws
Formula for marking stairs?
Measure floor height from ground.
- Floor height / 7.5 =
- Round up or down to nearest whole # = #treads
- floor height / # of treads = riser height
Formula for rafter length, total rafter length marking?
Gather critical dimensions
RL: Run = Span / 2 Rise= run x pitch / 12 Find hypotenuse: A2 + b2 = C2 (sq root c2 for rafter length in ft) Remainder x 12 = inches Remainder in x 16 = fraction
TRL: Run + projection Rise = total run x pitch / 12 Find hypotenuse: A2 + B2 = C2 (sq root c2 for rafter length in ft) Remainder x 12 for inches Remainder x 16 for fraction
Calculate for sheathing
Floor: (Length x Width)/ 32 = # Sheets ^ whole # x2 = total sheets 3/4” plywood
Walls: (Linear ft. X height)/ 32= #S ^ #s x 1.2 = total sheets 1/2” plywood
What are the 4 types of lumber?
Hard wood
Soft wood
Bamboo
Palm
What are the 3 lumber grades?
Yard lumber- we use yard lumber
Structural material
Factory and shop lumber
What is select lumber?
Good appearance identified by grades a-d
What is common lumber?
Suitable for general construction and utility purposes. Identified by grades 1 common - 5 common
Lumber dimensions
Framing:
2” x 6” = 1 1/2” x 5 1/2”
2” x 4” = 1 1/2” x 3 1/2”
1” x 4” = 3/4” x 3 1/2”
Sheathing:
4’ x 8’ thickness between 1/8” to 1”
What are the 4 primary types of nails?
What are their sizes?
Common wire
Finishing
Scaffolding
Roofing
2 penny(d) thru 60 penny(d)
What size nails do you use for:
Sheathing?
Framing?
What are the 3 most common sizes SOC use?
Sheathing: 2d thru 8d
Framing 10d thru 60d
Most commonly used in soc:
6d gussets
8d sheathing
16d framing
What are the 3 rules of thumb for nails?
- Use proper nail size
- must penetrate 3/4 into second board
- Drive nails at slight angle towards each other
- Use good nail pattern
