Connective Tissue Physiology Flashcards
What is the function of tendon?
connect muscle to bone
what is the function of ligament?
connects bone to bone
What fibers do tendon and ligament have?
parallel fibers
what represents stress on the stress-strain curve?
Load/area
What represent strain on the stress-strain curve?
displacement/ original length
What are the three distinct regions?
Toe region
elastic range
plastic range
What is the toe region?
nonlinear deformation of the tendons and ligaments as they are initially stretched
What is the elastic range?
stretched tissues return back to original length
What is the plastic range?
tissue does not return to original length
What % of toe region?
about 2% of physiological range
what % of elastic range?
about 4% of deformation
What can cause failure of tissue?
Overtime if a repeated amount of that repetitive microfailure in the tissue can lead to changes in the mecahnical properties and eventually failure of the tissue
What is yield point?
Change between elastic and plastic region
What is the ultimate failure point?
Tissue can no longer deform and causes tissues to breakdown or fail
what is creep?
increasing deformation under constant load
