Connective Tissue Flashcards
1
Q
Ground substance
A
Water, adhesion protein, large charges polysaccharides
2
Q
Functions of connective Tissue
A
- protection
- support
- binding together other tissue
3
Q
Fiber types
A
- collagen (white): high tensile strength
- elastic (yellow): stretch & recoil
- reticular: internal skeleton of soft organs
4
Q
Bone
A
- Composed of osteocytes
- sits in lacunae (cavities), surrounded by a very hard matrix that has Ca2+ and P salts with collagen fibers
- many blood vessels
- support and connection
5
Q
Cartilage
A
- composed mainly of chondrocytes
- more flexible than bone
- avascular
- types: hyaline, fibrocartilage and elastic
6
Q
Hyaline
A
- most abundant
- supporting structure of the larynx
- attaches ribs to sternum
- cover the ends of many bones, where they form joints
7
Q
Fibrocartilage
A
-forms cushion like discs between the vertebrae of the spine
8
Q
Elastic cartilage
A
-found in structures of elasticity (i.e. ear)
9
Q
Dense connective Tissue
A
- composed of collagen fibers, in between rows are fibroblast
- strong, rope-like structure
- found in ligaments and tendons
- also make the dermis
10
Q
Loose connective Tissue
A
- softer, composed of more cells and has less fewer fibers than all other connective tissue except for blood
- types: areolar, adipose, and reticular
11
Q
Areolar Tissue (Most widely distributed)
A
-soft, pliable, cobwebby
-“small open space”
-universal packing Tissue
(helps holds organs into place)
-lamina propria: underlies all mucous membrane
-defends against infection
-provides a reservoir of water and salts for surrounding tissues
12
Q
Adipose Tissue
A
- (areolar tissue with adipose cells predominating, 90% of mass)
- forms subcutaneous Tissue beneath the skin, for insulation, and protection against bumps and extreme temperatures
- site for energy storage
- cells swell and shrink as fats are added or removed
13
Q
Reticular connective Tissue
A
- reticular fibers with reticular cells interwoven
- forms stroma (internal framework for organs)
- supports many free blood cells (mainly lymphocytes) in lymphoid organs
14
Q
Blood
A
- surrounded by a nonliving fluid matrix
- consisting of blood cells surrounding blood plasma
- fibers of blood are soluble protein molecules that become visible during blood clotting
15
Q
Edema
A
-enlarged body part from soaking excess fluid from inflammation
