CH 1 - Organ Systems Flashcards
1
Q
Integumentary System
A
- covering/protection/cushioning from injury
- Vitamin D synthesis
- site of touch, pain and pressure receptors
- excretes salt and urea via perspiration
- regulates body temperature
2
Q
Skeletal System
A
- composed of bones, joints, cartilage and ligaments
- framework for skeletal muscles for movement
- body support
- protects organs
- hématopoïèses
- stores minerals and lipids
3
Q
Muscular System
A
- composed of skeletal muscles and muscles (made to contract and shorten)
- maintain body temperature
- maintains posture
- allows movement/making facial expressions
4
Q
Nervous System
A
- composed of the brain, spinal cord (CNS), nerves, sensory receptors (PNS)
- control system (fast response)
- responds to stimuli via sensory receptors, which sends a signal to the CNS, and either responds by activating a muscle or gland
5
Q
Endocrine System
A
- composed of glands
- controls body activities (slow response)
- produces chemical molecules, hormones (chemical messengers), and releases them into the blood to travel to distant organs.
- regulates growth, reproduction, and nutrient use by body cells (partially by hormones)
6
Q
Cardiovascular System
A
- regulates body temp, water and pH concentrations
- carries O2, CO2, nutrients, and wastes via blood vessels
- repairs tissue
7
Q
Lymphatic System
A
- composed of lymphatic nodes, thoracic duct, lymph vessels, thymus, spleen, and tonsils
- houses WBC involved with immunity
- picks up fluid leaked from blood vessels and returns it to the blood
- delivers lipids from the digestive system in blood
8
Q
Respiratory System
A
- composed of the nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, air sacs
- supplies O2 and removes CO2 in the body via blood
- produces sound (with the voice box)
9
Q
Digestive System
A
- b/d foods into absorbable units
- eliminates indigestibles as feces
- liver produces bile to b/d lipids
- pancréas delivers digestive enzymes
10
Q
Urinary System
A
- composed of kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra
- regulates the body’s water and salts (electrolytes)
- regulates the pH of the blood
- eliminates by-product nitrogenous wastes
11
Q
Reproductive System
A
-enables the production of offspring
