Body Membranes Flashcards
1
Q
Kinds of membrane
A
-Epithelial
(Cutaneous, mucous, serous)
-Connective (synovial)
2
Q
Cutaneous membrane
A
- outer skin
- two layers: superficial epidermis and dermis
- dry membrane
3
Q
Mucous membrane
A
- varies with site, rests on areolar connective tissue (lamina propria)
- lines all body cavities that open to the exterior
- for absorption/secretion
- wet membrane, but not all secrete mucous
- composed of stratified squamous epithelia or simple columnar epithelia
4
Q
Serous membrane
A
- made of simple squamous epithelium on a thin layer of connective tissue
- lines all body cavities (pleura, peritoneum, pericardial) except dorsal ones
5
Q
Synovial membrane
A
- made of loose areolar tissue (no epithelial cells)
- line fibrous capsules surrounding joints, bursae (small sacs of connective tissue), and tendon sheaths
- secrete lubricating fluid to cushion organs moving against each other during muscle activity
