Connective Tissue Flashcards
What are the 8 major CT classes?
- Bone
- Cartilage
- Dense
- Loose
- Areolar
- Adipose
- Reticular
- Blood
What are the 3 main types of cartilage?
- Hyaline
- Elastic
- Fibrocartilage
Hyaline cartilage
Collagen fibres that support the larynx, attach ribs to breastbone and covers the ends of bones.
Elastic cartilage
Structure with elasticity. Ex. External ear.
Fibrocartilage
Highly compressible, between the vertebrae of the spinal column.
Dense CT
Forms strong, rope like structures (tendons and ligaments), also makes up the dermis.
Loose CT
Softer, has more cells and fewer fibres than any other CT (except blood).
Areolar tissue
Soft tissue that cushions and protects the organs it wraps.
Adipose tissue
Fat
Reticular CT
Supports many blood cells (lymphocytes) in lymph nodes, the spleen and bone marrow.
Blood
Blood cells surrounded by fluid matrix called blood plasma.
Extracellular matrix
Produced by CT cells, then secreted to the exterior making it easier for CT to bear weight and withstand stretching.
