Body Cell Tissues Flashcards
Epithelium tissue
Glandular tissue of the body, covers all free body surfaces.
What are the 5 classifications of epithelium?
- Squamous
- Cuboidal or Square
- Columnar or Rectangular
- Stratified
- Pseudostratified
Simple epithelium
Very thin and flat. Main roles are absorption, secretion and filtration.
Cuboidal/square
One layer of square cells, found in glands and their ducts. Ex. Salivary glands and pancreas.
Columnar/rectangular
Single layer tall cells, line the entire length of the digestive tract.
Pseudostratified columnar
Tall/rectangular, gives the illusion that it has more than one layer. Mainly functions in absorption and secretion - respiratory.
Stratified epithelium
2 or more layers, primarily protects - esophagus, mouth and outer layer of skin.
Transitional epithelium
Stratified squamous epithelium that forms the lining of a few organs in the urinary system.
Glandular epithelium
Epithelial sheets that make and secrete a particular product. Ex. Glands
What are the 4 primary cell tissue types?
- Epithelium - coverage
- Connective - support
- Nervous - control
- Muscle - movement
