Connective Tissue Flashcards
What are the two components of connective tissue?
Cells and ECM
What are the components of ECM?
Ground substance and fibres
What are the three types of connective tissue?
Loose, dense regular and dense irregular
What is an example of loose connective tissue?
Colon submucosae
What is an example of dense irregular connective tissue?
Dermis
What is an example of dense regular connective tissue?
Tendon
What is the role of fibroblasts?
Synthesis and secrete ground substance and fibres
What is the role of macrophages?
Professional APCs, also phagocytosis nom nom nom
What is the role of mast cells?
Contain granules e.g heparin or histamine
Release chemotaxins
Bind to IgE so mediate allergic reactions
What cell types may be seen?
Fibroblasts Macrophages Mast cells Adipocytes (Plasma cells and leukocytes especially in inflamm)
What fibre types may be seen?
Collagen (most abundant)
Reticular (type III collagen)
Elastic fibres
What is ground substance?
Hyaluronate protein aggregate
Hyaluronic acid, with protein and GAGs branching off
Dense -ve charge to attract water
