Bone Flashcards
What are some functions of bone?
Support
Protection
Mineral storage - Ca metab
Haemopoesis
What are the bone cells?
Osteocytes
Osteoblasts
Osteoclasts
What are the constituents of the bone ECM?
65% Calcium hydroxyapatite
35% Organics (collagen, proteoglycans and such things)
What is cancellous bone?
Spongy bone
Present on the inside of bone
Trabeculae of bone
Bone marrow
What is cortical bone?
Much denser
On outside
80% bone mass
What is an osteon?
aka Haversian system
Central haversian canal
With concentric lamellae
Functional unit of bone
What are volkmanns canals?
Horizontal connections between osteons
What are canaliculi?
Tiny interconnecting tunnels between osteocytes
Connect via gap junctions
What is a fracture?
A discontinuity of the cortical bone
Describe the process of fracture repair:
- ) Haemotoma formation
- )Fibrocartilagenous callus formation
- )Bony callus formation
- )Bone remodelling
