Bacteria (Bugs in System) Flashcards
Describe the process of gram staining:
+ve crystal violet binds to -ve components
iodine complexes with crystal violet
acetone/methanol solution washes these out in from -ve cells
red dye then stains the now unstained gram -ve bacteria
Describe a gram +ve cell:
thick peptidoglycan wall
retains dye
Describe a gram -ve cell
thin peptidoglycan layer between two membranes
loses dye
What are the 5 common bacterial shapes?
cocci diplococci streptococci staphylococci bacilli
Name some gram +ve cocci:
Staphylococcus
Streptococcus
Name some gram +ve bacilli
Clostridium
Name some gram -ve cocci
Neisseria
Name some gram -ve bacilli
Salmonella Helicobacter Legionella Bacteriodes Escheria Pseudomonas
Which bacteria cannot be gram stained?
Mycobacteria - cell wall
Mycoplasmas - no peptidoglycan
Chlamydia, rickesettia - too small
What stain would be used on mycobacteria?
acid fast
