Cartilage Flashcards
How would you describe the blood supply of cartilage?
Poor; it is avascular
What is the perichondrium?
Outer layer
Has a fibrous layer
And inner celular layer
It is VASCULAR
What is appositional growth?
Chondroblasts in the perichondrium secrete ECM then move into and become trapped in it
What are chondrocytes?
Chondroblasts that have become trapped in ECM
What is the composition of the ECM? And why?
Large ratio of GAGs to collagen
Allows diffusion from blood vessels in perichondrium
What are the characteristics of hyaline cartilage?
Chondrocytes arranged in groups
Has a perichondrium (except at articular surfaces)
What are the characteristics of elastic cartilage?
Addition of elastic fibres
Has a perichondrium
What are the characteristics of fibrocartilage?
Combination of dense irregular connective tissue and cartilage
Has fibroblasts
No perichondrium
What are some locations of hyaline cartilage?
Articular ends of long bones
Template for endochondral ossification
What are some locations of elastic cartilage?
Pinna of ears
Laryngeal cartilage
Eustachian tube
What are some locations of fibrocartilage?
Intervertebral discs
Pubic symphsis
Acts as a shock absorber
