What is the mission of EAF?
To provide the Marine Air Ground Task Force with a flexible capability to rapidly deploy & establish a survivable self sustaining airfield(s) in support of the Aviation Combat Element (ACE).
Explain EAF
It’s a shore based, aviation weapons support system which permits deployment of landing force aircraft within effective range of ground forces.
Although an EAF may be nothing more than a grass landing zone (LZ) to support helicopter ops the installation of one or more EAF component adds versatility and durability to the site selected for aircraft ops.
What are some of the design/layout considerations?
- Duration/tempo of ops
- Type & number of aircraft (fixed/rotary)
- Taxiing/parking requirements (high power run-up/shelter)
- Location & terrain (barebase, flight approach obstacles, seasonal rainfall/drainage, & sub-soil preparation)
What is a barebase?
The use of existing airfields/roads to construct tactical military airfields. (When you utilize existing structures instead of AM-2 matting.)
What makes up the EAF systems?
- Airfield Recovery Systems-M31 Marine Corps Expiditionary Arresting Gear System (MCEAGS)
- Airfield Terminal Guidance Systems
- airfield lighting & marking
- Airfield communication system
- Airfield surfacing system
