4-2-1 Flashcards
Purpose of M-31 Marine Corps Expeditionary Arresting system
Is for the safe recovery of tail hook aircraft at a EAF site
Purpose of the E-28 Arresting gear
E-28 emergency runway arresting gear is a land based emergency standby gear for the purpose of safely arresting tail hook aircraft in the event of aborted takeoff or any emergency landing
Both E-28 and M-31 systems use two arrest or engines that?
Are rotary hydrodynamic energy absorbers and are designed to jointly dissipate the kinetic energy of a landing aircraft
Hand and arm signals are used for?
Non verbal communication
What color vests do deck, point, both engine operators, and safety wear?
Deck-Red
Point-Yellow
Engine- Green
Safety- White
When a hazard is observed anywhere in the operating area recovery personnel does what?
Calls “foul deck” 3times and notifies tower
How many pieces of information is required from the aircraft taking the arrestment?
10
What are the different pieces of information you need to get from the aircraft taking the arrestment?
- Type of aircraft
- Aircraft serial number
- Weight of aircraft
- Speed of aircraft
- Hung or unexploded ordnance
- Type of arrestment (emergency or precautionary)
- Wet or dry runway
- Day or night
- Center of airfield (feet of center & to which side)
- Roll out
What is the boot runner’s job?
To ensure all deck pendant supports are returned to the deck pendant after the arrestment
What is the job of the safety observer?
To ensure safety is observed at all times both equipment & personnel
What is the job of the retrieve engine operators?
To retract the tape & deck pendant to return the arresting gear to a “ready deck” position
What is the job of the plane director/point?
- gives the pilot a brake & release signal to allow the pendant to fall free of the tail hook
- signals the pilot to raise the hook & taxi directions
- if the pendant is still engaged or is following the hook, attempt to free it & signal for a pullback or hook retraction as required
- once the aircraft has cleared the area, signal for retract to the deck coordinator & engine operators
- **in the event of a “hook skip or bolter” the point man will give appropriate hand & arm signals and maintain a safe distance from the runway edge and aircraft
What is the long list of responsibilities of the crew leader/deck coordinator?
- upon notification of an intended arrested landing, will receive information pertaining to aircraft type, model, weight, intended landing, with or without hung ordnance and speed of aircraft from tower
- ensure by a visual check that there is a “clear & ready deck” & give signal
- *If a hazard is observed immediately declare a “foul deck” & notify tower
- in the event of a hook skip or bolter notify the tower or LSO (landing signal officer) & maintain a safe distance from the aircraft & runway edge
- along with the plane coordinator, the deck coordinator will give the signal to retract
- give control of the retract to the engine operators
- while the pendant is being retracted, scan the landing area for broken wire supports, objects that may have fallen from the aircraft, or any other unusual condition
- ensure proper “clear & ready deck” & relay to tower
