What is self-esteem
the feeling of self-worth that determines how valuable and competent we feel
What is self-efficacy
situational specific form of self-confidence directed towards a certain aspect of your performance
What is Bandura’s model of self-efficacy
What is vicarious experience in Bandura’s model of self -efficacy
vicarious experience:
watching others of similar ability could affect our self-efficacy eg- watching a classmate perform a somersault will increase your self- efficacy
What is performance accomplishments in Bandura’s model of self -efficacy
performance accomplishments: success leads to high self efficacy, defeat leads to low
What is verbal persuasion in Bandura’s model of self -efficacy
comments from significant others could affect our self-efficacy positive comments will increase efficacy and negative will decrease self-efficacy
What is emotional arousal in Bandura’s model of self -efficacy
optimum level of arousal is needed for high self efficacy- under arousal and over arousal will cause low-self efficacy
Strategies to improve self-efficacy - for performance accomplishments
- ensure success
-set goals- SMART targets
Strategies to improve self-efficacy -

What is vealeys sport confidence model
What is SC trait
existing level of self-confidence
Low SC trait = low SC state (vice versa)
What is competitive orientation
existing levels of combativeness/ desire to be competitive
What is SC state
confidence in specific situtation
if SC state is high their behaviour/ performance will be confident if their
SC state is low- performance confidence will be low
What is behaviour response
response to the situtation
What is subjective opinion
emotion felt towards the behavioural response (satisfaction or disappointment)
this will feed back into SC- trait and competitive orientation and affect future performance
What impact does sports confidence have on performance
improves performance- because performer is more motivated and is more likely to achieve and make firm decisions that have positive outcomes
eg 100m sprinter more likely to get a faster time if they are more confident
What impact does sport confidence have on participation
low SC- ay shy away from activities and avoid situations that may be related to competition
High SC- will be able to participate with other people and engage in team activities
Sports confidence impacts on self- esteem
High SC- often have high self-eteem which will help performance because sport often demands high level of arousal or drive to achieve
Low SC-experience low self-esteem and may not feel like a valuable member of the team
