Attribution Flashcards
What is attribution
the perceived causes of a particular outcome. The reasons, justifications and excuses we give to winning, losing or drawing
What is Weiner’s model of attribution
4 reasons for results:
Ability, effort, task difficulty and luck
What is ability on Weiner’s model of attribution
Internal/stable
eg we lost because our goal shooter wasn’t very good
What is task difficulty on Weiner’s model of attribution
external/ stable
eg we lost because the other team were better than us
What is effort on Weiner’s model of attribution
internal/ unstable
eg we won because we tried harder than the other team
What is luck on Weiner’s model of attribution
external/ unstable
eg we lost because the referee got the decision wrong
What is the locus of causality
whether the attributions come from within the person (internal) or from the environment (external) affected feelings of pride, confidence and shame
What is locus of stability
whether the attribution is changeable or unchangeable
affects expectations of future outcomes
What is self-serving bias
a persons tendency to attribute their failure to external reasons
What is controllability (Weiners model of attribution)
whether attributions are under the control of the performer of under the control of others/ environment
What is learned helplessness
belief that failure is inevitable
How do low achievers attribute failure
attribute failure to uncontrollable factors which leads to learned helplessness
How do high achievers attribute failure
see failure as a learning experience and attribute failure to controllable unstable factors
What is mastery orientation
view that an individual will be motivated by becoming an expert in skill development or sports performance
