Conference 28 anterior neck Flashcards
What are symptoms of bells palsy?
- flattened face with loss of forehead and nasolabial wrinkles
- sagging eyebrow, eyelid and corner of mouth
- tearing from eye
- drooling
Why would a patient with bells palsy have lack of forehead wrinkles?
because the facial nerve is damaged, which innervates the forehead muscles that make it wrinkle
what muscle is paralyzed if a patient complains of food getting stuck between his gum and cheek?
Buccinator
What muscle is paralyzed if a patient’s corner of their eye is drooping?
orbicularis oculi
What muscle is paralyzed if a patient;s corner of their lip is drooping?
orbicularis oris
What are the muscles of facial expression
- orbicularis oculi
- orbicularis oris
- platysmus
- buccinator
What are the muscles of facial expression innervated by?
facial nerve (CN 7)
When you ask a patient to wrinkle their forehead what branch of the facial nerve are you testing?
temporal
When you ask a patient to pucker their lips what branch of the facial nerve are you testing?
buccal
When you ask a patient to flare their neck what branch of the facial nerve are you testing?
cervical
When you ask a patient to forcibly shut their eyes what branch of the facial nerve are you testing?
zygomatic
When you ask a patient to show their bottom teeth what branch of the facial nerve are you testing?
marginal mandibular
What other muscles does the facial nerve innervate other than the muscles of facial expression?
stapedius
stylohyoid
posterior belly of digastric
what sensory deficit would be present if the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve was injured?
loss of sensation over forehead, anterior scalp, nose and cornea
(specifically this area is innervated by supraorbital and supratrochlear nerve of V1)
what are the sensory limbs of the corneal blink reflex
sensory: ophthalmic division of trigeminal nerve
motor: facial nerve
what sensory deficits would your patient present with if the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve was injured?
loss of sensation over the inverted comma that goes over the nose and cheeks
(specifically this area is innervated by infraorbital nerve off of V2)
what sensory deficits would your patient present with if the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve was lesioned?
loss of sensation over chin strap region extending to external ear
(auriculotemporal n.- sensory to skin around ear
buccal n.- sensory to skin of cheek
mental n.- sensory to skin of chin)
What two arterial branches off of the external carotid artery supply the face?
facial artery and superficial temporal artery
What artery does the superior and inferior labial arteries come off of?
facial artery
What structure does the parotid duct cross anteriorly to?
masseter muscle
What structure does the parotid duct pierce?
buccinator muscle
