Conduction and convection Flashcards
what is a conductor
a material that allows thermal energy to pass through it easily
what is thermal conductivity
how quickly energy is transferred through a material through heating
what state of matter does conduction mainly take place in
solids
what state of matter does convection happen in
liquids and gases
what is convection
where energetic particles move away from hotter to cooler regions
why is heating a solid different to heating a liquid or gas
- the gas and liquids are able to move around, so when you heat it, they move faster and the space between individual particles increases
how is a convection current created
when there is a constant heat source such as a radiator
how do radiators create convection currents
- energy is transferred from the radiator to nearby air particles by conduction ( the air particles collide with radiator surface)
- the air by the radiator becomes warmer and less dense ( particles move quicker)
- the warm air rises and is replaced by cooler air, the cooler air is then heated by the radiator
-at the same time, the previously heated air transfers energy to its surroundings
- the cycle repeats
