CONDITIONS - Unit 7b Flashcards
What is the Pathophysiology of CAD?
EAFN - “Elephants Are FuN”
- Endothelium damaged
- Attracts platelets +/or macrophages
- Fatty Plague develops (atheroma)
What is IHD?
Disease of the arteries
Blocks or reduced blood (O2) supply to the heart.
Abbreviations for:
HTN / CABG / CAD / IHD / CHD / LDL / HDL / MI
HTN - Hypertension CABG - Coronary Artery Bypass Graft CAD - Coronary Artery Disease IHD - Ischaemic Heart Disease CHD - Coronary Heart Disease LDL - Low Density Lipoproteins HDL - High Density Lipoproteins MI - Myocardial Infraction
What is the cause IHD?
A + P:
- Atherosclerosis (build-up of plaque in the walls of the arteries).
- Plaque (Clotting material called ‘ATHEROMA’)
What is the cause of Atherosclerosis?
Irritation of the endothelial cells.
What is the pathophysiology of IHD?
NBOH - “Never Been On Hawaii”.
- Narrowed arterial lumen
- Decreased blood supply to myocardium
- Decreased oxygenation of the myocardium
- Heart muscles dies
IHD: What are the risk factors
Anything that could irritate endothelium
IHD: Risk Factors: Modifiable
HHEDS:
- Smoking
- Emotional Stress
- Hypertension
- Hyperlipidema
- Diabetes
IHD: Risk Factors: Non- Modifiable
AGE G:
- Ageing
- Gender
- Genitics
- Ethnicity
What is hypertension
High Blood Pressure, Smooth muscle in artery thicken (VASOCONTRICTION) which leads to increased pressure on the arterial wall.
What is CAD?
Coronary Artery Disease.
Disease of the arteries
What is IHD?
Ischaemic Heart Disease.
Heart Ischaemic due to disease of the arteries
What is CHD?
Coronary Heart Disease.
Disease of the coronary arteries AND resulting complication.
Includes MI - Myocardial Infraction
IHD: What are the signs & symptoms?
- Chest Pain: Angina pectoris
- Heart attack: Myocardial Infraction
- Sudden stopping of heart = death: Cardiac arrest
What are the signs & symptoms of an angina?
- Chest pain or discomfort
-
