Condemnations at slaughtering plant Flashcards
1
Q
what is condemnation
A
- judged unsuitable for human consumption
- by canadian food inspection agency
- important record for broilder producer ( cant fix what you dont know)
2
Q
what is cellulittis
A
- infection under the skin cause by a scratch = subcutaneous infection caused by E. coli
- related to growth becasue skin is thinner and easily more scratched
- management and scratching causes = equipent (nails), handeling and stocking density, management practices - load Vs quiet
3
Q
what happens during a liver condition
A
- inclusion body - hepatitis - swollen liver
- necrotic enteritis (see a lot more raised without antibiotic)
- perihepatitis (e coli)
4
Q
other condemnations
A
- respiratory conditions
- dark coloured carcasses - inadequate blleding
- emaciation
- bruising
- leg conditions
- skin conditions
- abdominal oedema ascites
5
Q
what causes skeletal disease
A
- incidence
- casues = infection e.g osteomyelitis
- nutrion ( kalcium, phosphorus, vitamin D)
- trace minerals and B vitamins
- anti-nutritional factors
- environmental = photoperiod length
- growth rate
- genotype
6
Q
what is sudden death syndrome
A
- acute death syndrome flips over
- ventricular fibrillation (arrhythmia)
- incidence (males have a higher incidence, starts at 7 and peaks at 21 d)
- facotrs influencing ( growth rate and light- photoperiod length, light intensity doesnt effect this disease)
- nutrtion
7
Q
what is chronic heart failure (ascites)
A
- growth associated disease
- mortality dead on arrival, condemnatires
- chronic heart failure followed by ascites (related to ability to supply tissue with oxygen, cardiopulmonary function)
- factors influencing - altitude ( lower o2 heart workds harder) , growth rate ( heart working harder)
8
Q
what factors influence heart disease
A
- environment ( temperature, photoperiod length, ammonia/ dust)
- nutrition ( nutrient density, feed restriction, diet form, diet sodium content)
- genotype
9
Q
what are new issues in broiler production
A
- slow growth broilers ve conventionally reared broilers
- conventional growth rates may mean poor welfare (indications that behavioural expression is higher later in life if slow growing
- leg disorders may be lower
- need to determine if longer time in barn (environment, dust and wet litter) = issue for welfare
10
Q
raised with antibiotics incorrect issue and correct issue
A
- incorrect issue = there is a period to let them out of the system
- correct issue = bacteria developing a resistence
11

A
