Computer Hardware Flashcards
What is an input device?
A hardware device that enters data into the device.
What is an output device?
A hardware device that communicates and displays the data from input devices.
What is a communication device?
A device that is able to send and receive signals to allow computers to communicate with other computers like a telephone.
What are some examples of input devices?
Digital cameras, scanners, keyboards, mouses
What are some examples of output devices?
Monitor, speaker, headphones, printer
What are some examples of communication devices?
Bluetooth Devices, modem, smartphone, wi-fi
What are the advantages of keyboards? (Input device)
- Keyboards enable fast entry for new documents
- They make using the device easier
What are the disadvantages of keyboards? (Input device)
- User’s with restricted arms/wrists can find keyboards difficult to use
- Keyboards take up a lot of desk space
What are some uses of a mouse? (Input device)
- Opening and closing applications
- Grouping, moving and deleting files
- Useful when editing images
What are the advantages of a mouse? (Input device)
- Faster to select options than the use of a keyboard
- Take up little space on the desk
What are the disadvantages of a mouse? (Input device)
- People with limited hand/wrist movement may find it hard to use a mouse
- They are difficult to use if their is no flat surface to use them on
What are some uses of a numeric keyboard? (Input device)
- ATM Machines
- Used in telephones
What are the advantages of a numeric keyboard? (Input device)
- Faster to enter data than a keyboard
- As many of them are smaller devices, they are easier to carry around
What are some disadvantages of a numeric keyboard? (Input device)
- They can be difficult to use as they have small keys
- Difficult to use them to enter text
What are the uses of CRT monitors? (Output device)
- They are used as the primary output in base computers to allow the computer to see the data being entered
- Used with light pens to allow designs to be created on the screen
What are the advantages of CRT monitors? (Output device)
- They produce a higher quality image than TFT monitors
- They work with light pens in CAD/CAM applications
What are the disadvantages of CRT monitors? (Output device)
- They are heavy and considered a weight hazard
- If they are older, they can become hot due to dust gathered on metal plates
What are the uses of TFT monitors? (Output device)
- They are the primary output device to see what is being typed
- Integrated into laptops
What are the disadvantages of TFT monitors? (Output device)
- The angle of viewing is critical, which means it may be difficult for multiple people to view the screen
- They can’t be used with light pens, reducing CAD usage
What are the uses of an inkjet printer? (Output device)
- Used for photo printing
- 3D inkjet printers can be used in industry’s to produce prototypes
What are the advantages of an inkjet printer? (Output device)
- Output is high, and they are cheaper than laser printers
- They are light with a small footprint
What are the disadvantages of an inkjet printer? (Output device)
- The output is slow for multiple copies
- Ink cartridges can run out quickly and even smudge if the user is not careful
What are the uses of 3D printers? (Output device)
- Used to produce prototypes
- Produce organic objects
What are the advantages of 3D printers? (Output device)
- They save money as opposed to other methods of making prototypes
- Physical scale models are produced with working parts so give the best idea of how the final product will look
What are the disadvantages of 3D printers? (Output device)
- Expensive to buy and slow at making models
- The end product may still need to be worked on
