Components of the blood Flashcards
Components of the blood include:
Plasma
White blood cells
Red blood cells
Platelets
Red blood cells
Red blood cells carry oxygen from our lungs to our tissues
Why is oxygen transport efficient
This is because:
There are huge numbers of red blood cells
The cells are so tiny to allow them pass through narrow capillaries
They have a flattened disc shape to increase surface area to allow rapid oxygen diffusion
They contain haemoglobin which absorbs oxygen in the lungs
White blood cells
White blood cells can engulf bacteria and other pathogens by phagocytosis
They can change shape easily and produce enzymes that digest pathogens
Platelets
Platelets are small fragments of cells
They are involved in forming clots where there is a wound
Plasma
Plasma is a straw-coloured liquid
It transports dissolved substances around the body, including:
Hormones
Antibodies
Nutrients
Waste products
