Circulatory System Flashcards
Functions of the Circulatory System
Transports oxygen & nutrients to major organs
Maintains body temperature and fluid levels
Removes all carbon dioxide and lactic acids away from muscle cells
The circulatory system is made up of:
Blood
Blood Vessels
Systematic circulation
Pulmonary Circulation
Heart
Systematic circulation
Systematic circulation carries oxygenated blood & nutrients around the body
They return the waste products that need to be removed from the body
Pulmonary circulation
Pulmonary circulation carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs
carries oxygenated blood to the heart
exchanges carbon dioxide and oxygen
Structure of the heart
The heart is divided from right to left by a thick central muscular wall called the SEPTUM
The left side of the heart pumps blood rich in oxygen all around the body
The right side of the heart pumps blood low In oxygen to the lungs
How does blood flow through the heart
Deoxygenated blood comes into the right atrium, moves into the right ventricle and is pushed into the pulmonary arteries in the lungs. After picking up oxygen, the blood travels to the heart through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium, to the left ventricle and out of the body
what are valves
valves are special structures that prevent the backflow of blood
