Second Language Acquisition
learners become more advanced the longer they are immersed in the language they are learning and more time they spend doing free voluntary reading
Stage 1 of SLA- Pre-production
learner watches and listens in attempt to absorb the language- silent stage
SLA stage 2- early production
early production- starts to use some words but hasn’t mastered forming sentences- pics are helpful
SLA stage 4- intermediate fluency
learner has a much better grasp on the language as he/she begins to comprehend info taught in the second language and speaks in longer sentences
SLA stage 3- speech emergence
learner uses simple sentences that may or may not be correct- begins to understand simple phrases
SLA stage 5- advanced fluency
the learner can speak and understand the new language with little to no support- go beyond basics and think critically in the acquired language
