Alphabetic Principle
Ability to connect letters with sounds, and to create words based on these associations
What are the 4 phrases of the Alphabetic Principle?
Pre-Alphabetic; Partial Alphabetic; Full Alphabetic; Consolidated Alphabetic
Pre-Alphabetic Phase
Can identify things by their design (i.e. Wal-Mart/McDonald’s), but are not connecting the letters and the sounds of the logo
Partial Alphabetic Phase
They get exposed to alphabet block playing and concrete letter objects that are typical in early childhood programs; begin connecting the shape of the letters with the sound they make and connecting initial letter with the sound of the names of peers
Full Alphabetic Stage
Children begin making connections between the letters, the sound that they make, and the actual meaning of the word
Consolidated Alphabetic Stage
Begin conceptualizing that they can use components of words that they know to decode new words; begin discovering how they can create new words with the use of onsets, rhymes, and other letter sequences
What are the three types of writing systems?
Pictographic, Syllabic, and Alphabetic

Words, ideas, and concepts are represented with a visual or image

Syllables are depicted through the use of unique symbols
