comparative anatomy Flashcards
what is comparative anatomy
Comparing structural features of related animals to determine the degree of similarity between them
The closer the degree of similarity the more likely they are to have come from a common ancestor
explain what embryology is
Comparing the embryonic stage of development
In vertebrates it shows a similarity between different species at different times
The presence of these structures is significant if the vertebrates are seen as an evolutionary series that began with fish like ancestors millions of years ago.
Over time evolution resulted in the divergence into amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals
This evolutionary line is supported by fossil evidence.
what are vestigial organs
Structures of reduced size that appear to have no function
Evolution explains their existence
They are the remains of organs which were functional in ancestral forms
Over time these organs were no longer essential for survival
Because they were not disadvantageous we still possess these structures, however they were reduced to harmless vestigial remnants as they require energy for maintenance
Eventually these orans may disappear
