Communications Flashcards

1
Q

What does selecting a radio transmitter switch do?

A

Illuminates the selected switch and makes that transmitter active. Only one transmitter may be selected. A mic is then used to transmit over selected transmitter. Reception is enabled (you can listen to it) when selected regardless of position of receiver switch

Q

What is the purpose of the ALT-NORM switch on the ACP?

A

NORM allows ACP to operate normally.

ALT allows for alternate ops, degraded mode, in the event of an ACP panel failure.

In degraded mode (ALT) the ACP transmitter or receiver selectors are not functional. Only the useable radio is heard at a preset level through the headset

*CA only use VHF 1
*FO only use VHF2
*Observer only use VHF1
*Receiver selectors are
not functional
*Speaker & speaker
switch (knob) isn’t
available
*Flight interphone and
service interphone
is not available.
*The control wheel PTT
and ACP PTT are
not available in the
intercom position.
*The hand microphone
is not available.
*The volume is preset.
*Audio warnings are
NOT heard on the
audio system that is
operating in the
degraded mode.
§ PA’s are not available
(must use dedicated
handset).
o The mask and boom microphones can be
keyed with the control wheel PTT switch.
o ACP1 is limited to VHF1
o ACP2 is limited to VHF2
o ACP3 is limited to VHF1

Q

What is the purpose of the VHF TEST switch?

A

It removes the automatic squelch feature, permitting reception of background noise and thereby testing receiver operation. It also improves the reception of weak signals.

Q

What does the white offside tuning light indicate on the RTP?

A

If any transceiver other than the
onside VHF or HF radio is selected, the white offside tuning light will illuminate at the top of the RTP

“The on-side radio is being tuned by another radio”
OR:

Q

What is the indication of a radio failure?

A

FAIL FAIL displayed on the RTP indicates that the selected radio has failed.

The RTP continuously monitors the condition of the transceiver. If the transceiver failed

(the selected frequencies may continue to be displayed in the frequency indicator when radio is not available)

Q

What is the purpose of the PA hand mic on the aft electronics panel?

A

To make a PA to the cabin easier than having to push the correct buttons and risk broadcasting on an active frequency.

The PA allows pilots to make a PA regardless of ACP selection

Q

What precautions (if any) should be taken when keying an HF radio on the ground?

A
  • Insure that the aircraft is not being fueled / defueled,
    and
  • Insure that no personnel are present at the
AFT Service door or the AFT entry door.
  • Transmissions are limited by regulation to
those necessary to check HF com’ capability.

Q

How is an incoming SELCAL indicated?

A

An incoming SELCAL is indicated by a 4-tone chime and if the code matches the assigned code (identifier) the white call (C) light ill’ and a chime sounds.

*The radio must be tuned to the proper monitor frequency for SELCAL reception

Q

What is the purpose of the service interphone switch on the aft overhead panel?

A

Enables intercommunication between flight deck, FA’s and ground crew.

Jacks are located in the:
-Wheel Well,
-External power panel,
-Electronic Equipment
compartment
-Fueling station behind
access door on right wing

Q

In what order of radio selection does the Communication System attempt data transmission?

A

1) CMU will try VHF.
2) CMU tries SATCOM
3) CMU will try select HF.

VHF - line of sight, not > than 120-200 miles from ground station.
(CMU)= Communications Management Unit

The Datalink Communications System is made up with:
*Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS)
*Controller Pilot Datalink Communication (CPDLC)
