What is communication?
a basic human function; dynamic, reciprocal process of sending and receiving information
consists of verbal and nonverbal messages that help build working relationships and meet physical, psycho-social, emotional and spiritual needs

Self-talk; can be positive or negative

Between two or more people

Between many people at one time

the use of spoken and written words to send a message
What are some types of verbal communication?
vocabulary
Denotative (dictionary) dictionary
Connotative (implied or emotional) meaning
Pacing - the rhythm can impose meaning
Intonation - the tone of voice
Clarity and brevity - (brevity is using verbal efficiency)
Timing and Relevance - timing to when a patient can receive the message; relevance to the topic
Credibility - the past, present and perceived truthfulness of the message/individual
Humor - can be a good or bad effect dependent on the timing
How does vocabulary affect nursing communication?
Laypersons are often unfamiliar to jargon used in healthcare and a nurse must adjust her speaking to the level of understanding of the patient
How does denotative and connotative meaning affect nursing communication?
Whether or not a word is used according to its dictionary/denotative meaning is aligned with the connotative (implied or emotional) meaning will impact the interpretation of the meaning of the communication
How does pacing affect nursing communication?
The pace and rhythm of the delivery can imply meaning to a communication
- fast pace/rhythm may indicate frustration, anger and may lead to loss of interest and breakdown of communication
- slow pace/rhythm may also cause loss of interest
- a balance must be struck in pace/rhythm with pauses for reflection between thoughts
How does Intonation affect nursing communication?
the tone of voice can reflect feeling behind words through pitch, cadence, and volume. They convey confidence, enthusiasm, sadness, fear, anger, anxiety,
