- Verbal/oral communication (one way vs two way communication) - Interpersonal/ group communication
- Visual - pictures, graphs

- Electronic communication - writing and responding to emails/ whatsapp, facebook

- Active listening

A
- Good Relationship understand the patients
- Mutual respect - pt. is always given benefit of doubt in case there is psych/cognitive impairments
- Please/thank you/tone of voice
- Body language Position e.g. standing over pt / Eye contact - Genuineness show you care

What are the benefits of communication in therapy?
A
- Effective data collection (examination)
- Puts patient at ease will get more information to help you come up with a diagnosis
- Patient compliance and satisfaction
- Therapeutic relation promotes healing

How would you develop a therapeutic relationship?
A
Introduction and purpose (who, what, and why)
Form of address (e.g. Mr. Joseph) SHOW RESPECT
Ask for CONSENT permission to touch.
LISTEN TO THE PATIENT - Understanding the patients perspective/views on their illness
ASK QUESTIONS - Acknowledge the patients experience, knowledge about the topic, myths
and beliefs.
Setting goals WITH the patient, as opposed to FOR the patient
Provide genuine feedback

- Time constraint - don’t rush
- Environment - interruptions and privacy
- Cultural differences - seek info about the pt’s cultural norms
- Writing notes continuously during the pt interview
- Using jargon
- Language difference and vocabulary used
- Age difference
- Attitudes and beliefs
- Patient having the incorrect info - make sure
- Passivity - need to have ongoing response
- Practitioner dominance
- Inappropriate self-disclosure
- Interrogation/Grilling
- Distancing patterns - Taboos against crying, Skirting uncomfortable issues, False reassurance, Emotional detachment
