What are the uses of bandaging?

A
  1. Retention- to keep the wound clean and retain medicine, ice, POP
  2. Support - to stabilise injured area, and to prevent further injuries
  3. Compression- to reduce swelling or bleeding a d to encourage circulation

What are the principles for application of bandaging?

A
  1. Communicate with the patient
  2. Establish precautions or contraindications
  3. Get things ready
  4. Wash your hands
  5. Make sure the patient is in a comfortable position
  6. Make sure application is neat
  7. Functional bandage performance

What are the contraindications/ precautions for bandaging?

A
  • Active infection
  • severe peripheral arterial disease
  • cardiogenic oedema
  • pulmonary embolus
  • recent thrombophlebitis
  • allergies to bandaging materials
  • severe skin infections
  • diabetic microangiopathy
  • congestive heart failure
  • decreased sensation
  • metastatic disease
