Common OB Meds Flashcards
Uterotonics: Common Drugs
Oxytocin (Pitocin), Methylergonovine (Methergine), Carboprost (Hemabate), Misoprostol (Cytotec)
Uterotonics: Mechanism of Action
Stimulates uterine contractions to induce labor or control postpartum hemorrhage.
Uterotonics: Contraindications
Uterine hyperstimulation, previous uterine surgery, known hypersensitivity.
Tocolytics: Common Drugs
Terbutaline (Brethine), Magnesium sulfate, Nifedipine (Procardia), Indomethacin (Indocin)
Tocolytics: Mechanism of Action
Inhibits uterine contractions to delay preterm labor.
Tocolytics: Contraindications
Severe preeclampsia, intrauterine infection, fetal distress, maternal cardiac disease.
Cervical Ripening Agents: Common Drugs
Dinoprostone (Cervidil), Misoprostol (Cytotec)
Cervical Ripening Agents: Mechanism of Action
Softens and dilates the cervix to prepare for labor induction.
Glucocorticoids: Common Drugs for Preterm Labor
Betamethasone, Dexamethasone
Glucocorticoids: Mechanism of Action
Accelerates fetal lung maturation by promoting surfactant production.
Rhogam (Rho(D) Immune Globulin): Indication
Prevents Rh sensitization in Rh-negative mothers exposed to Rh-positive fetal blood.
Rhogam: Contraindications
Rh-positive patients, known hypersensitivity to human immunoglobulin.
Rhogam: Safety Considerations
Administer within 72 hours of potential exposure, monitor for allergic reactions.
Oxytocin (Pitocin): Specific Use
Used to induce labor or control postpartum hemorrhage, titrate dosage based on uterine response.
Methylergonovine (Methergine): Specific Use
Prevents or treats postpartum hemorrhage by increasing uterine tone, not for use in hypertensive patients.
