Anticonvulsants Flashcards
Hydantoins: Common Drugs
Phenytoin (Dilantin), fosphenytoin (Cerebyx)
Hydantoins: Mechanism of Action
Stabilizes neuronal membranes by decreasing sodium influx, reducing seizure activity.
Hydantoins: Contraindications
Sinus bradycardia, heart block, hypersensitivity.
Hydantoins: Safety Considerations
Monitor serum drug levels, gingival hyperplasia, and for signs of toxicity (nystagmus, ataxia).
Iminostilbenes: Common Drugs
Carbamazepine (Tegretol), oxcarbazepine (Trileptal)
Iminostilbenes: Mechanism of Action
Reduces synaptic transmission by blocking sodium channels, used in seizure disorders and neuropathic pain.
Iminostilbenes: Contraindications
Bone marrow depression, hypersensitivity, history of bone marrow suppression.
Iminostilbenes: Safety Considerations
Monitor CBC, liver function, and for signs of bone marrow suppression (anemia, leukopenia).
