What is a mental disroder?
A mental disorder is characterized by a clinically significant
disturbance in an individual’s cognition, emotional regulation,
or behaviour. It is usually associated with distress or impairment in
important areas of functioning.
What are problems that can arise when diagnosing mental disorders?

-Individuals may not fit
into clear categories
-Can be used
unethically/subjectively
What does a mental health assessment invovle?
- Symptoms, experiences, feelings,
thoughts and actions - Physical health and well-being

- Culture and ethnic background
- Use of drugs and/or alcohol
- Previous/past experiences
- Risks to self or others
- Carer responsibility
- Strengths, skills and coping strategies,

What is dementia?
- Memory problems

- Impaired activities of daily living
What is substance misuse and what can the spectrum be?
-Spectrum of harmful use to dependence
-Dependence can be physiological or
psychological
What are psychotic illnesses characterised by?
– Hallucinations
– Delusions
– Thought disorder
– Negative symptoms
What is the age of onset typical in men and women for schizophrenia and psychosis?
Males – 15-25 yrs (young adulthood)
Females – 25-35 yrs
What do patients with schizophrenia and psychosis usually require?
- Usually requires antipsychotic medication, can
involve CBT/psychological interventions
What are example of mood disorders?
-bipolar affective disorder
-Unipolar depression
What is biopolar affective disorder and what can it include?
- Episodes of elevated mood and
irritability - Can include psychosis
