Impact of soviet occupation of Eastern Europe on superpower relations

A

USA saw it as betrayal of yalta agreement
Others saw it as evidence of soviet expansion and a chance to take over west
USA was determined to contain communism thru military and economic assistance (Trueman + marshal)
USSR argued it needed to control Eastern Europe as a buffer zone, preventing attack from the west, and the us was doing too much

17
Q

What was the Truman doctrine (1947)

A

Countries faced a choice between communism or capitalism
Communism was bad cause it meant ppl couldn’t be free
USA must try to contain the spread of communism
The USA should provide money and troops to help free governments to combat communist takeovers

18
Q

What was the marshal plan (1947)

A

Around 13 billion from USA to help rebuild Europe
Communism appealed to most ppl with nothing to lose, so marshal plan hoped to stop communism by giving people a staken in the capitalist system
Countries must trade with USA to get the money
16 west Europe countries took the money
USSR criticised the marshal plan as an attack on them cause it threatened communist control in east Europe

19
Q

What was cominform (1947)

A

Communist information bureau
It organised all the communist parties in Europe and arranged their leadership so they would do what Moscow told them to do
It got rid of any opps to the USSR control in satellite states
It encourage communist parties in west countries to block Marshall plan assistance

20
Q

What was Comecon (1949)

A

Council for mutual economic assistance
Soviets alternative to the mardhal plan
Built up trade links between Comecon countries
Prevented Comecon countries signing up to the marshal plan

21
Q

Consequences of Comecon, cominform and NATO

A

West Europe as now one group and linked to USA thru containment of communism
East Europe was now one group, tied to USSR as satellite states and ussr believed socialist revolution would spread worldwide
2 spheres of influence

22
Q

NATO (1949)

A

Military alliance of west Europe mostly
Based around principle of collective security
Directed against a possible military attack from Soviet Union of west Europe

23
Q

Bizonia and west Germany

A

Part of the masrchal plan
Became trizonai when France joined too
Introduced new currency- really made it a whole new country
Soviets hated this as they thought USA wanted to permanently divide rich west from poor east

24
Q

Significance of NATO

A

Showed that after Berlin blockade and users development of atomic bomb, neither USA or west Europe govs were prepared to accept future user aggression
USSR therefore turned to strengthening its control over east Europe, resulting in formation of Warsaw pact
Now 2 military pacts facing each other across the iron Curtain

25
Significance of Warsaw pact 1955
Now 2 opp alliances in Europe Both alliances planned for military action against the other, including nuclear weapons Gave ussr direct control over the armed forces of its satellite states, strengthen grip on east Europe
26
Eastern Germany and Berlin blockade
Soviets had 1.5mil troops in its zone, west didn’t have many West ate the food east Berlin grew In June 1948 ussr closed roads, rail and canal links to West Berlin to force west allies to leave their zone in the city (they would have no food etc) USSR blocked supplies into Berlin showing hat they had the power to stop the union working
27
Berlin airlift Impact on west Germany Impact on east Germany
June 1948 to September 1949 Thounsands of tonnes of supplies flown daily into Berlin West impact: Made USA seem peaceful and generous Sep 1949 West Germany was officially formed NATO also formed to counter soviet military threats East impact: Made them seem aggressive and threatening Oct 1949 east Germany officially formed Warsaw pact formed in 1955 to counter NATO
28
Why did kruschev tighten control over Hungary
After Stalin died they started to move away from Russia, but he worried that if Hungary withdrew from Warsaw pacts other countries would too (domino effect)
29
Impact of soviet rule on Hungary
Suffered a lot Food and industrial products shipped to Russia Any opps in Hungary were ruthlessly wiped out Rakosi was very brutal ruler ‘bald butcher’ Communist rule was very unpopular
30
Destalinisation
When Stalin died Khrushchev took over. In 1956 he delivered the secret speech indicating soviet control would relax Hungarians started protesting due to poor harvest against communist control Statues of Stalin being pulled down, local communists being attacked Khrushchev appointed a more liberal prime minister - Imre Nagy, hoping situation would calm down
31
Nagy as prime minister
He wanted the follow8g for Hungary: Leave the Warsaw pact and become a neutral country Hold free elections leading to no more single party communist gov UN protection from USSR
32
How many troops did Khrushchev send to Hungary to depose Nagy and restore order? In November 1956
200000
33
Consequences of soviet invasion of Hungary
Over 5000 Hungarians killed, 1000 soviet troops killed Nagy and government deposed Nagy arrested and executed, Khrushchev wanted to prevent future rebellion like Poland, so this was a good threat Janos Kandaratnam new leader appointed
34
International reactions and consequences of Hungarian uprising
United Nations condemned soviet actions Some countries boycotted Olympics in protest USA supported with money, medical support, but didn’t actually help invade and fighting Because this would risk nuclear war Hungary was on its win against Soviet’s- they had to give in Satellite states saw that USA wouldn’t help them against ussr. Soviet control retightened across east Europe
