What was happening to the population of East Berlin and why?
The population was decreasing due to people leaving for the more prosperous Western Berlin. Many of those leaving were very intelligent and it became known as the ‘brain drain’
Who was the president at the time of the Berlin wall?
JFK (He did the moon landing in 1969)
What did Krushchev accuse Kennedy of?
He accused Kennedy of provoking conflict. He claimed that the USA was using Berlin as the base for its spies. This was true but the soviets were also using Berlin as a hub

He sent 1500 extra troops to West Berlin.
What was the most worrying thing that happened at Checkpoint Charlie?
Soviet tanks pulled up to Checkpoint Charlie and refused to allow any more entry to East Berlin

The wall stayed in place and became a symbol of division in Germany. Both sides used it for propaganda

Cuba was considered USA’s ‘backyard’ and was ruled by General Fulgencio Batista. He was very corrupt but he was anti-communist so the US supported him. In 1959 Fidel Castro (famous flag) overthrew the general. Thousands fled into exile in the USA

Castro feared an invasion of Cuba by the USA. He asked for a 100 million package deal with weapons.
What was the bay of pigs invasion?
April 1961, JFK organised a group invasion of Cuba led by 1400 cuban exile. The plan was a humiliating defeat for Kennedy.
What did Krushachev supply Cuba with?
Arms; soviet missiles, plus control boats.
