What was the Smith act?
Made it illegal to not only to plan or attempt to throw over the government but to call for it. Passed in 1940

He was strongly anti-communist. He set up the FBI employee loyalty boards which allowed him to investigate 3 million people of which 212 were identified as security risks.
What did the hollywood 10 say when they were questioned?
They quoted the first amendment, which guarantee’s all Americans to believe what they want to believe
What was the Hiss case?
1948, WHITAKER CHAMBERS faced the HUAC and admitted to being a communist. He said that ALGER HISS (A high ranking member of the US state department) was a communist. This case was dismissed however RICHARD NIXON decided to pursue the case and found convincing evidence that HISS did know CHAMBERS and had probably passed information.
Who were the Rosenbergs?
They were ‘spies’ who passed information to the USSR. They were executed in 1953 despite flimsy evidence. However, historians today believe the the Rosenbergs were guilty
What did the international security act passed in 1950 bring?
-All communist organisations had to be registered with the US
governments and their members finger printed.
-Communists could not carry US passports
-The setting up of detention camps in emergency situations
What did McCarthy claim?
That he had a list of 200 US government officials who were communist, that number however was reduced to 22

Many senators opposed him. Quality newspapers such as the New York times and Washington Post wrote articles that attacked him

He was an expert on China and Eastern Asia and was the top advisor to president Truman when China fell to communism. He was accused for 12 days by the HUAC

Tv journalist, in 1953 he broadcasted an entire episode of his show ‘see it now’ which attacked McCarthy
Why did McCarthyism decline?
He accused the army, claiming there were communist sympathisers inside their ranks. In public trials, he was humiliated by Joseph Welch who even asked him ‘have you no sense of decency’
