Who was Paul Robeson?

A

Black Lawyer, son of a church minister who had been a slave. He found it hard to get work due to his race and so turned to theatre. He had his first big break in ‘showboat’, and played the lead role in ‘othello’ in 1943-44. Due to a visit to Moscow in 1934 he became supportive of commnist views, due to their lack of discrimination against him. This lead to him being tried before the HUAC due to a comment he made about African Americans not wanting to fight for America due to the discrimination they faced.
