COL: Nucleic acids Flashcards
How many nucleotides does DNA pack in one cell?
packing 300 000 000 nucleotides in 1 cell!
• DNA is tightly wound
What are histones?
Histones are proteins that help organize DNA into chromosomes and regulate gene activity
What are genes?
a sequence of
nucleotides, which code for a specific protein / characteristic
What are Nucleic acids ?
Transfer genetic information
• Determine which protein is produced by the cell
• Contain C, H, O, N, P
• Made up of building blocks: nucleotides
What are the 2 types of Nucleic acids ?
DNA - Deoxyribonucleic acid (found in the nucleus
Stores hereditary info )
RNA - Ribonucleic acid (found in the nucleolus, cytoplasm, and ribosomes and build the required proteins from amino acids)
What is the structure of DNA ?
• A double helix
• Sugar-Phosphate backbone
connected by base pairs
• Bases are connected by weak
Hydgrogen bonds
• Deoxyribose sugar
• Nitrogen bases:
• Adenine
• Thymine
• Guanine
• Cytosine
