What is the type of CBT used to help Schizophrenics called?
CBTp which stands for Cogniticve Behavioual Therapy for Psychosis
How is CBTp able to help Schizophrenics?
- it helps the patient cope with their symptoms
- does this by disucssing their delusions and hallusination so they can better understand how they effect their emotions and behaviour
- then arguing against them and test them against reality in order to show that they are irrational
How many sessions does the NICE recommend?
5 - 20 sessions but the most effective amount in 16 session
What are the stages of CBTp
- assessment
- engagement
- ABC model
- Normalisation
- Critical Elabrative Analysis
- Developing Alternative Explanations
What occurs in the assessment stage of CBTp?
- the patient is encouraged to express their concerns to the therapist
- they describe their symptoms
- they explain what they hope to achieve with therapy
What occurs in the engagement stage of CBTp?
- therapist empathises with the patients experience and shows the patient that they can be honest with the therapist
What does the ABC model stand for in CBTp?
A= Antecedant
B= Behvaviour
C= Consequence
What is Anecedant?
a stimuli that triggers the patient’s problem
What happens in the normalisation stage of CBTp?
- therapist explains their sytmptoms to the patient to make them feel less alienated
- this reduces stress and shame in the patient
What happens in the critical alabtotive analysis stage of CBTp?
- a logical discussion occurs to test the patients delusions against reality and challenge them
- this will show them their delusions are illogical and help them move towards alternative thought processing
What happens in the develope alternative thought stage of CBTp?
- this teaches the patient coping strategies and and logical reasons for their delusions
- in order to apply their coping methods they do homework where they do a hypothesis test on their delusions against real situations
