Biological Treatment Flashcards
1
Q
What are the main types of drug treatments?
for schizophrenia
A
- Typical
- Atypical
2
Q
How do drug therapies work?
A
- they follow the dopamine hypothesis
- they work by decreasing or increasing dopamine levels in order to reduce symptoms
3
Q
Describe typical antipsychotic.
A
- they are an antagonistic drugs that are taken 2-4 times a day
- this was discovered inh the 1950s
- an examnple of this is cholopromazine
4
Q
Describe atypical antipsychotic behaviour.
A
- this is a drug taken 2-4 times day
- this was discovered in 1990
- an exampe of this is clozapine and risperidone
5
Q
How do atypical antipsychotic drugs work?
A
- these temporarily bind to D2 receptors on the post synaptic neurone
- they also bind to dopamine receptors
- they then rapidly disassociate in order to allow a normal dopamine transmission
- this reduces positive and negative sympotoms
6
Q
How do typical antipsychotic drugs work?
A
- It binds to the D2 receptors on the post synaptic neurone
- This reduces the stimulation of the dopamine system
- this preventing hallucinations and delusions (positive symptoms)
