What is schizophrenia?
a psychosis disorder characterised by a profound disruption of cognition, emotions and sense of self

Where is the DSM-5 used?
USA
Where is the ICD-10 used?
Europe
What is the criteria for DSM-5 dagnosis?
they need to find one positive symptom in the patient
What is the criteria for ICD-10 diagnosis?
they need at least two negative symptoms to be found in the patient
What are positive symptoms?
a symptom that is an excess or distortion of a normal function
What are examples of positive symptoms?
- hallusinations
- delusions
- alorgia (according to ICD)
What are examples of negative symptoms?
- avolition
- affect flattening
- alogia (according to DSM)
What is avolition?
- a reduction in interests, desires and goals
- motivational definit
What is alogia?
speech poverty (lack of speech and fluency)
How do the two classifications views on speech poverty differ?
DSM-5 views it as a negative symptom as it reduces the amount and quality of speech
where as ICD-10 believes it’s a positive symptom it’s viewed as speech disorganisation due to Schizophrenics becomen incoherence when topics of conversation changes
