Biological Treatment AO3 Flashcards
1
Q
What are the strengths of biological treatments
for schizophrenia
A
- effective (according to Thorne)
- the3 side effects are oftern benefitial (according to Silverman)
2
Q
What did Thorne find?
A
- he investigated clorpromize by conducting 13 trials and 1121 patients
- he found in 5 trials and 512 patients showed lower relapse rates compared to the placebo drug given
3
Q
What positive side effects did silverman find?
A
patients were said to have increases attention levels and information processing
4
Q
What are the weaknesses of biological treatments?
for schizophenia
A
- there are dangerous side effects (according to Kapur et al)
- they aren’t a long term solution (according to Davis)
5
Q
What did Kapur find regarding the side effects of drug treaments?
for schizophrenia
A
- in order for the drugs to be effective 60-75% of D2 receptors need to be blocked which means important receptors in the brain will also be blocked
- this results in side effects like involuntary tongue, face and jaw movements (for typical drug treatments)
6
Q
What did Davis find that showed that drugs are not a long term treament?
for schizophrenia
A
his patients abruptly stoped taking medications which lead to revolving door syndrome and re-emmergence of symptoms
this shows it’s not long term and therefore my not be stopping the underlying cause
