- offenders identify situation that prove anger so they can recognise when aggressive outbursts may occur
- aim is to change the way we interpret a situation

- new coping skills are learned to help deal with anger-provoking situations, such as relaxation, assertiveness and conflict resolution

- SE Ireland 2004 - 50 young male prisoners on AM course and 37 control and 92% showed improvement
- however, ppts could lie to reduce sentence
- CBT is a better treatment as it acknowledged past experiences and thoughts
