why does cognitive techniques aid recall
A
- when event has a number of associations you can create different means by which memory can be cued
- retrieval most effective if at the time of retrieval the context surrounding events can be reinstated

- 51 ppts watched 2 films of violent crimes and 48 hours later given 1 of the interviews
- (also an interview done under hypnosis)
Significant increase in number of correct items recalled using cognitive interview (40) compared with standard (30)
Fisher 1989
- when training, detectives gained as much as 47% more useful information from witnesses to real crimes
