Cognitive area ( Simons and Chabris) Flashcards
inattentional blindness
The failure to see an event or object that is in your field of vision because you are so focused on other elements of what you can see.
who was inattentional blindness originally investigated by
neisser
aim 1
To investigate if inattentional blindness would be more likely if the unexpected event was similar to the attended event
aim 2
To find out if particularly unusual events would be more likely to be seen.
aim 3
To investigate whether participants would have trouble noticing the unexpected event when the task they were given was more difficult.
aim 4
To investigate the effect of the ‘transparent’ video and compare if the same level of blindness would occur in a more realistic (‘opaque’) video.
aims
wanted to investigate whether the results from Neisser research were affected by the way he had made his video or whether the same results would be obtained from a more true to life video.
sample
228 participants
undergraduate students at Harvard
however 36 not analysed so 192
procedure
Individually, each participant watched a short video (75 seconds) and was then asked questions about what they had seen. Participants were in one of 16 different conditions based around manipulation of four independent variables- 4 aims
conclusions
Overall, participants noticed the unexpected event 54% of the time (and therefore failed to see the unexpected event 46% of the time).
