Stage Theory of Memory
several different memory systems and that each system has a different function
sensory memory
contains fleeting impressions of sensory stimuli
short term (working) memory
info you attend to goes from sensory memory into short term —> 7 (+ or - 2) pieces can be stored here
long term memory
permanent storehouse of one’s experiences, knowledge, and skills
Rehearsal- maintenance
repeating the info (keeps info in short term memory)
Rehearsal- elaborative
organizing the info. & associating it w/ info already in long-term memory (get info. into long term memory)
procedural memory
remembering how things are done
declarative memory
where explicit info is stored
- semantic: remembering general knowledge
- episodic: remembering particular events you have personally experienced
