CBT Define
A form of psychological counselling/psychotherapy aimed at helping people recognise and change the thought patterns and behaviours that feed their health problems
Steps
- Identifying troubling situations or conditions in your life
- Become aware of your thoughts, emotions and beliefs about these problems
- Identify negative or inaccurate thinking
- Reshape negative or inaccurate thinking
Step 1: Identify problem
You and the therapist may spend time deciding what problems and goals to focus on
Step 2: Awareness of thoughts and emotions
Once you’ve identified the problems to work on, your therapist will encourage you to share your thoughts on them
Step 3: Identify negative or inaccurate thinking
Helps to recognise patterns of thinking and behaviour that may be contributing to your problem
Step 4: Reshape negative of inaccurate thinking
Ask yourself whether your view is based on fact or an inaccurate perception
Limitations
- Patient must commit themselves to the process or it will not be effective
- Is not quick
- May not be suitable for people who have more complex health needs or learning difficulties
Strengths
- One of the most effective treatments for conditions where anxiety or depression is the main problem
- The psychological therapy with the widest and broadest evidence base
- Reduces relapse of depression more than antidepressant medication
