Biological Bases: CNS Flashcards
1
Q
CNS Define
A
Is comprised of the brain and spinal cord, and acts as the brain’s processing center, gathering and synthesising sensory information and responding to it
2
Q
Main Functions
A
- Gathering sensory information from external stimuli
- Synthesising information
- Responding to stimuli
3
Q
Components
A
- Brain
- Spinal Cord
4
Q
Brain
A
- Consists of cerebellum and cerebrum, which consists of two hemispheres and four lobes
- It is composed of millions of nerve cells that transmit electrical and chemical signals throughout the body
5
Q
Spinal Cord
A
- Runs from the brainstem and is a major thoroughfare for messages between the brain and the body
- Consists of 31 segments, each with sensory nerves leading into the dorsal (back) side and motor nerves exiting the ventral sides
- Contains white matter on the outside (myelinated neurons) and grey matter on the inside (unmyelinated neurons)
