Coasts as a system Flashcards
What is a geographical system made up of
Inputs, stores, transfers and outputs.
Systems strive to be in dynamic equilibrium - what is this?
A state of balance within a constantly changing system.
Coasts open or closed system
Seen as both an open and closed system.
Why are coasts an open system?
As it receives inputs from the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and cryosphere.
Why are coasts a closed system?
During research it is a closed system where a specific sediment cell is examined.
Sediment cell
A stretch of coastline bordered by two headlands where the movement of sediment is contained.
Positive feedback
Change in a natural system which takes the system away from dynamic equilibrium.
Negative feedback
Changes in the natural system that brings it back to dynamic equilibrium.
Example of positive feedback at a coast
As waves erode the cliff, material is released.
This materials abrades the cliff which results in even more cliff erosion.
Example of negative feedback at a coast
As the shore is eroded, material makes the wave cut platform wider, this can absorb wave energy an reduce the impact at the base of the cliff.
