Chapter 10: Treating Victims of Ethnic Conflict, Genocide, and Mass Violence
Trauma
An extraordinary psychological experience, caused by a threat to one’s life or bodily safety or a personal encounter with violence and death that overwhelms ordinary human functioning.
Ubuntu
An African concept or value, called forth by Nelson Mandela in an effort to reinstate justice to people in South Africa after the end of apartheid, that emphasizes the interconnection of all people and beings.
Reparations
Acts of compensation offered to victims in an effort to restore what has been lost. An aspect of the restorative justice model.
Restitution
The return of property, things, and even human remains to their rightful owners. An aspect of reparations.
Refugee
A person who, owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality.
Immigration
The movement of people into a country or region to which they are not native in order to settle there. Immigration is done for many reasons, including temperature, breeding, economics, politics, family reunification, natural disaster, poverty, or the wish to change environments.
